Ph.D. and M.Sc. positions in the Villarreal Lab
I am accepting applications from prospective M.Sc. and Ph.D students interested in the study of molecular systematics, functional genomics of the symbiosis between cycads/lichens/bryophytes and microbes (bacteria, fungi and viruses).
Highly motivate undergraduate students are encouraged to join the lab. We have a track record of several talented undergraduates “sticking around” for a M.Sc. and doctoral degrees.
As part of their training, I expect graduate students to be highly motivated, develop original ideas, and apply to some grants to partially fund their research program (it enhances their CVs as well). I encourage students to be independent and flexible enough to collaborate in interdisciplinary projects.
Applicants should have a Bachelor’s degree in Biology or a related discipline. Ph.D. applicants holding a M.Sc. degree are particularly encouraged to apply. I encourage the application of candidates with field experience, bioinformatics skills and interest in natural history. Postdoctoral applicants are expected to be independent and have a solid background in bioinformatics.
How to apply
E-mail me (jcvil9@ulaval.ca) a one-page letter of intent describing your research interests and a brief description of the type of research that you would like to pursue in our laboratory. Please also include your CV and unofficial transcripts.
Funding
Funding for graduate students at Laval University is competitive but obtainable. Applicants are strongly encouraged to apply to external funding sources.
